To say that the new Continental is a game changer for Lincoln has to be a gross understatement to say the least. The new Continental is a marked step in a new direction for Lincoln, which let's face it, has not been a leader in luxury domestic sales, like say Cadillac has been, for a very, very long time.
I feel, as many others do, that this vehicle changes this. I was simply blown away with everything about this car. It's looks, reminiscent of the Continental of the 1960's, are simply stunning to look at. It's interior. Leather everywhere, soft touch surfaces, quality switches, comfortable design, all speak of a new direction. A direction of a new kind of American luxury, which is a good thing.
My test car came in at a price tag of $79,750, and was well equipped with the potent twin turbocharged 3.0 litre V-6 which pumps out 400 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. This is all this vehicle needs to propel it down the road, and mated with the 6 speed auto, it moves smartly and quietly. It's an effortless sedan that never pretends to be something it's not. So what does that mean? Well, it means it's not a sports sedan that's for sure. Lincoln has designed this car to be a comfortable cocoon of luxury, which happens to be able to dust many sports sedans twice its price.
Options on my car were the 3.0 litre engine, the technology package, the luxury package, and the rear seat package. The rear seat package gives those in the back massaging seats! Yes, massaging seats! The front passengers get the massaging seats as well, which work well at making longer drives more easy on ones back. These are must have options.
Over the course of my one week test drive, I averaged around 12 litres per 100 kms, for fuel economy, which is pretty good. I have to say that I was never too aggressive with the throttle, as I enjoyed this car for its smooth an comfortable ride. Highway drives were simply sublime.
As part of the technology package, a $3000 option, which includes those gorgeous LED headlights, you get a single slot CD player, hidden in the lower centre consul in addition to a 19 speaker Revel Ultiama sound system. I love that Lincoln includes a CD player as an option, as I do, yes I still do have a collection of CD's, and prefer their sound quality over that of satellite radio (which is always terrible) or MP3's, which don't sound as good.
The Continental has three modes for suspension settings, comfort, normal, and sport. I left the car in comfort mode for most of the time as let's face it, this is a luxury car, and Lincoln did not design it with any sporting pretensions, which in my opinion is a good thing. I like that it does not try to be a sports sedan. Lincolns should be elegant and sophisticated, and that's exactly what this car is.
In conclusion, I feel that this car is the best ever product to date built and sold by Lincoln, and by that extension Ford. It really is a step up in the right direction, and if Lincoln keeps this up, I feel it has nowhere to go but high places.
Pros:
