Party on! The tail end of my week with the 2015 Ford Transit was nothing short of fun, fun, fun! Starting off with a drive to BC via Hwy 93 from Calgary, I tested the highway chops of Ford's new van to the fullest extent.
Actually, to tell you the truth, I drove to BC to meet up with old pals for a bachelor party, and took full advantage of utilizing the Transit's cargo room to carry all the crap that goes along with these sort of shindigs.
I averaged a simply amazing 10.3 litres per 100/km in diesel fuel for the round trip, which is about 330 km each way. This includes some heavy hill climbing, and a nasty headwind on the way out to B.C. Equipped with the optional inline 5 cylinder, 3.2 Litre Diesel engine rated at 185 horsepower and 350 lb ft or torque, the Transit never once felt under powered, and actually had decent passing power.
Handling is very good for such a large van. I actually enjoyed the steering, which I found to be direct and precise. Being hydraulic, the steering had feel to it, something lacking in all modern electric steering setups. The wheel itself looks like it was plucked straight from the Focus, same size, feel and buttons.
The driving position was very good, and I found the seat to be comfortable and supportive, meaning I had no back pain at the end of my long journey. However, I did find the lack of a real dead pedal to be something I missed. There is a cubby right above where your left foot goes, and I found myself resting my foot on there from time to time.
This is the first all new full-size Ford van since the E-series was revised for the 1992 model year, and even that revision was based on a design from the 1970's!
